Petals
This is what lies
behind the brick wall
which
bulges in his dreams at night
behind
the wall she has faced in the day.
It
is the screw of the knife in the stomach.
It
is the suck and pull of not being, of no one, of nobody, nothing.
It
is death.
They
are lovers in bed their bodies wrapped around each other.
They
have set themselves up against the pit.
They
have reached out to make—love.
It
is desire which turns the knife around upon despair,
moistening
her lips
parting
her open, and
in
kissing his dark body
making
more than their separate parts:
petals
opening amidst the oceans of nothing.
