Shrouds for Children
“In those days,” she
said,
“The
nurses made them.
The
frills round the neck and wrist
were
elasticated to fit.
The
back opened
so
we could tuck them in
as
if they were sleeping.
Before
we let the parents see,
we’d
close their eyes,
brush
and settle the hair,
arrange
their fingers
so
rigor mortis clutched
the
single rose.
I
worked quickly, made sure
there
was always one
of
each size not wanting
to
sew for a particular child.”
