Seán Street has published seven collections of poetry, the most recent being Time Between Tides – New and Selected Poems 1981 -2009 (Rockingham Press, 2009). His prose includes The Wreck of the Deutschland (Souvenir Press, 1992) and The Dymock Poets (Seren, 1993, reprinted 1998), as well as a number of key texts on UK Radio history. He has worked as a radio practitioner for 39 years, and recent work has included a feature on John Magee, the pilot-poet, author of “High Flight” (BBC Radio 4) and the Irish singer Delia Murphy (Ireland’s News Talk 106FM). He is currently working on a documentary to mark the 400th anniversary of the first permanent British settlement in Newfoundland, for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in February 2010. Linked to this, Seán is researching the life and work of Robert Hayman, author of Quodlibets (1628), probably the first book of poetry to come out of Canada. In June 2010 he will give a paper on Hayman at Memorial University, Newfoundland as part of the conference, “Exploring New World Transitions”. Time spent in Newfoundland has informed much of his most recent poetry. His plays have been widely performed; Honest John, about John Clare was first performed by the Royal Theatre, Northampton and subsequently won the Central Television Award for new drama. His most recent work for the stage is Beyond Paradise – the Wildlife of a Gentleman, a one-man play about Charles Darwin, which has been touring with the ex-RSC actor, Christopher Robbie as Darwin. Seán is Professor of Radio and Director of the Centre for Broadcasting History Research in the Media School, Bournemouth University.
