Catching the Turkey-pluckers’s Bus

7.30 a.m. Tired workers
with tired fingers.
Thin stains of blood,
feathers, trapped
in the folds of their overalls.

The school-girls board the bus,
dust the seats off with their hands.

Later, in the breeze from the one
open classroom window, feathers
will float from a pocket,
from the crease of a pleat,
the elbow-crook of a blazer

drift up in the air,
so much chalk dust.
