Growth Rings

Once she was willow, her narrow skirt
a strip of sunlight in the woodland,
her blouse an unfurled leaf.

As maple she wore skirts of scarlet,
fretted sleeves
that showed her skin like clouds.

Now oak.
Jackets of knubble and gnarl.
Thickening, thickening.

Acorns at her feet.
