The Outsider

I live in a hide,
brain on the binocular hook,
lungs on the fold-down latch,
nerves on a ledge.

I see in slats,
planks grained with people,
dizzying parallelograms of traffic,
belt-straps of departing light.

No one knows I am here
but I have my breath
to blow cool glass scrolls,
maps for living in the mist.
