To a Singing Master

But who shaved, washed
and dressed you for the pyre?

Did they handle you gently,
or treat you like a piece of meat?

(Were we not one flesh?)

Who cut and sewed your shroud?
Was it clean? Was it threadbare?

Who slammed back the doors,
raked out the ashes?

Ah my singing master,
who sings to you now?
