Pamela Coren: I was born in the front room of a ‘two-up and two-down’ in Rochdale. I went to the local grammar school, and on to read English Literature at the University of East Anglia and then Kings College London (these were the days of the full state grant). I taught medieval and renaissance literature in the English Department at Leicester University until 2001, and published academic papers on Spenser, Donne, Jonson, Campion and the poetry of lutesong. Recently I’ve published on Ivor Gurney, and Hopkins. I’ve read poetry since I could read, and written it more or less since I could write, but only began to take myself seriously enough as a poet to submit poems for publication in 2000. Since then I’ve had poems published in Raindog, The Interpreter’s House, Aireings, The Reader, Poetry Nottingham, Smiths Knoll, Magma, Iota, Dreamcatcher, Reactions 4 , Rialto, Orbis, The Dark Horse, Brand, Other Poetry. Early encouragement came from Julie Lumsden asking me to be the feature poet in Poetry Nottingham International in Autumn 2002, Brian Nellist of Liverpool University writing a personal letter in praise of poems taken for The Reader 11, and Esther Morgan taking a batch for UEA’s Reactions 4. I’ve had a handful of competition wins: they bring a confidence boost, as do letters of appreciation of particular poems which sometimes trickle through. In 2004 I was asked by Patrick Ingram, of the small press Laurel Books, if he might publish a first collection. The Blackbird Inspector was published in July 2005. It has been reviewed by, amongst others, Glyn Pursglove in Acumen September 2005. I prefer to contact readers rather than audiences. I don’t teach creative writing, but will take one-off workshops or seminars on specific areas of poetry past and present. Contact: e-mail Pamela Purchasing Details: The Blackbird Inspector is available by mail order from Laurel Books, price £7.99 + p&p. 282 The Common, Holt, Wiltshire, BA14 6QJ or e-mail Laurel Books.
