Nigel Forde began his career as an actor at York Theatre Royal and has stayed in the area ever since.

He co-founded Riding Lights Theatre Co. and his most recent roles with them have been Eisenring in The Fire Raisers, Subtle in The Alchemist, and Polixenes and Antigonus in The Winter’s Tale.  He has been a contributor to scores of programmes on BBC radio and is best known for presenting Radio 4's Bookshelf.

He works primarily, now, as a writer. He has won several poetry prizes, and a musical written with Arnold Wesker was premiered recently in Japan. He wrote the screenplay for three of BBC 2s animated series Testament,  one of which was nominated for a BAFTA and won an EMMY and his latest film was awarded the Special Distinction in a TV Series at the 2002 Anneçy International Animation Festival.  He wrote two films, for Claire Bloom and Jonathan Pryce, in Norman Stone’s series ‘Tales from the Madhouse’ and the script for Channel 4's experimental ‘Play in a Week’.

He has published eight books to date including four of poetry, a critical anthology of G.K.Chesterton, and a study of Literature and belief: The Lantern and the Looking-Glass. His play, Friendly Fire, set in the English Civil War, toured Britain last autumn, High Tide and The Last Cuckoo are touring at the moment as, in Britain and the USA, is his stage adaptation of The Screwtape Letters.  He is researching an anthology, writing a two-hander play entitled Stone, Paper, Scissors, and a film.

His latest book of poems A Map of the Territory, was published in November 2003 by Oxford/Carcanet. In Pocklington he runs a branch of the Poetry Society’s Poetry School.

Like most writers, he is very dull but has interesting friends.
