Promises, promises

you promise me
a crocodile
(two turtles
on the side)

in spite of better judgement
I believe you

sort of

a hot day
shadows threading
oak and beech
a lazy river
all rocks and reeds
stitched in sunshine

an unlikely venue
but still I believe you

after all
men make promises
all the time
from I love you downwards

you say
round the next bend
I promise

I imagine
dragon-scales
light-bulb eyes
a snarling smile

who am I to quibble?
they say all things
(even crocodiles)
are possible

and you haven’t let me down
yet
