Margaret Speak is an adult literature tutor who lives in York. She has an MA from Leeds University and has been writing poetry for about 20 years and prose a little less. She has been published in many magazines including Poetry Review, The Times Literary Supplement, Mslexia, Writing Women and New Welsh Review. She has also been published in various anthologies including Images of Women, Parents, Making Worlds: 100 Contemporary Women Poets, Dark Lullaby: the Sandburg-Livesay Award, Four Caves of the Heart, and several from The Poetry Business and Giant Steps. Her own collection, The Firefly Cage, was published by The Redbeck Press. She has also been a prizewinner in many competitions including Cardiff, Exeter and Bridport, with both poetry and prose. She won second prize in the MacLellan Award, 2006. She has been shortlisted in The Asham Award and for a Canadian Poetry prize. She was deviser and co-founder of The Yorkshire Open Poetry Competition, now in its 23rd year, and is the coordinator of York Poetry Workshop. She likes to explore moments of change and this is a recurring theme in her poetry.
