A Capital H

History is Kings –
less often Queens –
and dates, scattered
like teeth in the turned
soil of our recollection.

History is the painting
on the palace ceiling,
God, Jesus, that gold pigeon,
Kings, putti, horses nobler
than their riders, mounded,
strategically naked women.
History mostly wins battles

but history,
Thumbelina sized,
sits in each single life
however short, a potent
seed of story.

history is not head
hands or even heart,
it is the narrative
of how you go
where it takes you,
the long poem
of feet.
