Isabel Bermudez was born in Bogota and came to England as a young child.

She has worked as a documentary film-maker and a schoolteacher and is now a tutor of French, Spanish and English. Her poems are published in a range of magazines and have been shortlisted and/or commended in a number of competitions including the Bridport Prize, Torbay International Poetry Competition, Poetry on the Lake (Italy), Ballymaloe International Poetry Prize and the Aesthetica Poetry Competition.

She lives in Kent with her husband, the painter Simon Turvey. Her debut collection Extranjeros is published by Flarestack Poets (2015).

Comment on Extranjeros:

Here are the deep, heavy shades of a hot country, as impressions from the past stand out from the shallow surface of the present …p the language spilling into Spanish ‘like a basket of hanging plants’. This collection speaks truly to anyone who carries strong images of another land, the place of childhood – and that is all of us.

These poems understand the past is forever seeping into the present, even generations later; they are vibrant, colourful acts of personal, cultural and historical recovery.
