Oct 07: Helen has just won second prize in Ilkley Literature Festival Performance Prize - having been a winner on 2 previous occasions. Helen Burke has been writing and performing poetry for the last twenty years. She has won several poetry competitions: the Manchester, York, Suffolk, Norwich, the Southport International (Comedy) Prize and the Ilkley Literature Performance Award - and, in 2005 - the Ilkley Literature Performance Poetry Prize. She has also had many commendations and minor awards in the Jersey, Nottingham, Lincoln (Comedy), Mere, Yorkshire, Ware and Wells Poetry Competitions, the Pulsar Poetry Prize, and The Second Light and Scintilla competitions. Publications she has appeared in include Rialto, New Welsh Review, Dreamcatcher, Affectionate Punch, Tears in the Fence, Raindog, Quintessentia, Helicon, Scintilla, Northwords, Kindred Spirit, Bogg and the Oxford Magazine. She has written for radio, also for a locally acted video, and her work has twice been set to music, both in the U.K. and in Australia. She has led writing workshops for local schools, for the National Trust, and at various poetry festivals and writing groups, and has run poetry and music events for local and national poets in the centre of York. She has read at many poetry venues in the U.K. and as part of a Beverley Literature event, with the Poet Laureate. She has given and organised readings as part of the York Poetry Festival, as well as the Hull Literary Festival, her theme for the 2005 Ilkley Literature Festival being "East meets West - borders and boundaries". Helen has 3 pamphlets published — "Poetry", "Island of Dreams" and "The Book of Beyond" — also, a c.d. of poems called "The Gift". Her work has been sold in the U.K., Belgium and Greece and she currently has a poem nominated for the Forward Prize.
