Helen Burke (        - 2019)

 

Helen Burke has been writing poetry for 35 years; she now also writes plays, short stories, comedy sketches and does painting and visual art.  Her work has been widely published and anthologised and she has won a number of competitions such as the Manchester International , the Norwich , the Suffolk , the Yorkshire prize, the Southport Comedy, the Devon and Dorset and many others.

Her work has been published and distributed in America by www.origamipoems.com  who are based on Rhode Island – she has 5 booklets of poems with them.  She is also featured on a Hollywood Blogzine – Venusin Scorpio – this features both poems and artwork, and in Eclectic Eel journal.

She has read with Poet Laureate – Andrew Motion – and reads at many National Literature and Music Festivals in the UK.  She is a regular reader on ELFM Radio of  her poems , and her comedy sketches were recently performed by a team of actors on ELFM Radio.  Her work has been described as witty, surreal, humane and accessible.

She performed her own one woman show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival – and last year performed in Paris, at a Cabaret Event of poets. She performs in 2 weeks time in Paris again at the American Library – reading in both English and Romanian.

Publications include – Helen Burke The Book of Beyond; Helen Burke Poems; Island of Dreams ( a book of Greek inspired poems);   and last year – launched The Ruby Slippers with Valley Press in London.   This last book is available on Amazon and Kindle as well as through Valley Press of Scarborough.  (Her next collection is with Valley Press also , in 2013.)

Her work can also be seen in Timpul, the literary journal of Romania – where her work has been both translated and broadcast on Romanian Radio.  She has helped to edit and polish work for the University of Bucharest.

Her art work is also featured in the latest book  The Ruby Slippers.  A new book, And God Said Let There Be Chocolate, will shortly be published by Krazy Phil’s Press and will feature at a Festival in York.  Later in the year she reads in Huddersfield , also at a cabaret event in Salford , also Liverpool and Suffolk, and London. Also she appears at Headingley Literature Festival.

Currently she has paintings hanging in Hull City Art Gallery, as part of the Ferens Open Exhibition – and has a solo show of poems and art planned for later this year.
