A Woman Who Looks on Glass

after George Herbert

In the last year of her life

she blew an unexpected legacy

on a vast picture window

for Cedarwood, the bungalow

where they celebrated

not quite sixty years of marriage,

sat watching Blackie and the other birds

diving for fat, nuts and cake, looking

for the old man in blue overalls

leaning on his rake in the lettuce lines

who wouldn’t be in for his tea.
