Sleeping partner

Up from little silver
up the Orinoco
shedding its stink.
Reluctant traveller
not diamond-hard
but almost.
Crystalline. Forget
it won’t be shaped
or forged.
No plate, no rivers
named for it.
A brittle star
blue in some light
blue like the ink
of my fountain pen.
A shy ingredient
spiralling the grooves
of bakelite discs
the twelve bar blues
wearing itself out
with style. Not sapphire
but almost.
