behind heroes square
through
the biting mist of morning.
footsteps
sound ... across the square.
past
the tomb, past the flame
past
a lone group of japanese
— visitors,
having history explained —
past
statues, heroes of battles never won ...
floodlight
towers support a dozen hazy suns.
to
one side, a winter palace
worn
stone ...
captured
by time, alone.
ahead,
a bridge
where
you can still buy red stars
and
mouldy chocolate bars
and
by the bridge through freezing railings
a
thousand children in bright colours skating
and
as they dance on this lake of ice
as
they laugh with frozen breath
—
in this lowry landscape —
through
broken music ...
falls
the gentlest snow ...
