Long-term Stay

There were no leaves
on the trees
when I came here,
pale, blue-lipped and breathless.

I watched as spring
made slow progress
through grey skies,
pale-edged, chilly, struggling.

I noticed people’s coats
become jackets
more light-weight,
pale-toned, not black, brown, navy.

I felt my healing,
strength returning,
muscles aching under
pale indoor skin.

I sensed the long nights,
barely darkening,
dusk and dawn so close,
pale, pink and humid.

I felt the fullness
of midsummer,
re-packing my ‘overnight’ bag,
pale, dusty; winter gloves still inside.
