I
have never seen an angel
but
I see this bowl,
these
apples and pomegranate.
I
have time enough.
My
sisters bring me food.
I
have solitude.
I
can arrange this fruit
as
I wish, leave
the
pomegranate
outside
the bowl or in,
watch
the skin colour change
with
the hours, with
what
light there is.
And
should I miss
the
best of the morning
on
the tankard, no matter;
tomorrow
I’ll fix
how
it will be then, not now.
I
am after all painting
what
I know for though
we
have dreams, fancies
they
can lie like ruined
pillars,
monuments
to
vanities,
best
friends sag dead
against
cemetery walls
and
the state turn viper.
So
though I paint
this
still-life, I fix
the
time when I knew all this
when
my apples and pomegranate
breathed
in my room
and
the light changed for us all.
