Joanna Ezekiel was born in Redbridge, Essex in 1969 and grew up in coastal Essex, north Kent, and Redbridge. Her mother is Jewish of Russian-Polish descent, and her father is from the Bene-Israeli Jewish community of Mumbai, India. Joanna has been writing since early childhood. After studying English and Education at Oxford Brookes University, Joanna trained as a primary school teacher at Goldsmiths College, and taught for several years in East and South London. She is a creative writing tutor for the Open University and the Open College of the Arts. Since 1988, Joanna’s poems have appeared in many magazines, journals, and anthologies including Reactions 3, and in Writing Works (pub. Jessica Kingsley. 2006). Her poems have been shortlisted in the Amnesty International, Writers Inc., and Norwich Writers’ Circle poetry competitions. Joanna completed an MA in Creative Writing and Personal Development at Sussex University in 2004. A Braid of Words, Joanna’s first pamphlet, was published by Poetry Monthly Press in 2003, to good reviews. In 2007 White Leaf Press published Joanna’s pamphlet Safe Passage.
