Googling the nightingale

They don’t fly this far north
so I googled the nightingale
I’d never seen or heard:
plush in my chair I was warm
and dry, no need of binoculars
or a hide, while from a Constable
landscape came four full minutes
of bird and song – and I fidgetted,
yawned, looked at my watch.
That evening at dusk I put empty
milk bottles out on the step,
picked up the litter – fag-ends,
half-eaten chips, a dirty lager glass –
saw that someone had
peed down the wall
and out of the coming dark
a blackbird sang – as a rainbow
might sing if a rainbow could.
