My Raconteur
i.m. of Patrick
Hagan 1893-1987, actor
I
looked for you today
in
Berkeley Square,
the
drone of cars ruled out a nightingale,
no
Blue Angel flew, there were no spats.
Remember
spats? Collapsible silk toppers?
I
looked for style
the
backdrop of a good address,
a
flash of wit behind sash windows,
a
grace that held the eye, the smile.
I
looked for you, my raconteur.
The
scent remains: pomade,
medicaments,
dry paper,
it
lingers in the well of drawers,
the
folds of clothes left behind,
in
your wardrobe
where
dancing tails hang still,
in
suitcases without destination,
in
the old cigar box
where
memories were stored. Today
I
found a rosary, a baby's shoe.
