Stop Press:  Caroline Carver is taking up
a Hawthornden Fellowship in November 2007

Caroline Carver was born in England, evacuated by convoy to Bermuda in 1940, and then taken to Jamaica. She returned to school in England as a teenager, before emigrating to Canada for 30 years, and is now back in England, in Cornwall, with her husband, a dog, two cats and four hens.  The  next generation of Carvers live across the water in Falmouth.

Having skirted around the literary life by working in publishing, radio, television and finally pr, as broadcaster, writer, journalist and consultant, Caroline wrote drama, fiction and non-fiction on the side, and only began writing poetry in the 1 990s with the Falmouth Poetry Group.

She won the 1998 National Poetry Competition and was shortlisted in 2000 for the Forward Prize best single poem.  Her first collection, Jigharzi An Me, came out in 2000 and her second, Bone-Fishing, in 2006.  Her writing has been published in many literary journals, here and abroad, and she's written several commissioned poems.

She's active with many groups in the poetry world, including Lapidus and Second Light, and in Cornwall, with Falmouth Poetry Group and Stray Dogs. She’s poet-in-residence at Trebah Gardens and will be taking up a Hawthornden Fellowship later this year.  Along with three other UK poets, she's been invited to New York in October for a week of readings.

“I had been writing poetry for about two years before the dialect began to come back to me. I had not thought of it since childhood and had no idea I remembered it. The first jigharzi poems came like ghosts at midnight. Since then I’’m always split in two, writing in first one voice and then another."
