Crouching Nude
(Dutch Gold Leaf with Mixed Media)

That girl – half-furled into a pallid glow
Of stucco brick, a wall rough-iced with lime,
Some well or furnace, who would ever know,
Or hidden chimney camouflaged by time –
Not posing, crawling from the painter’s eye,
Fumbling for a missing secret door
The painter will not give her – not a cry
She utters as she feels the master draw
Her pain in gold, her tears that he must wet
And all her sadness steep, a brush’s sweep
To shape her shell or nest, her hide, and yet
Unpack her angel’s heart, her pain core-deep.

     The painter gilds the beauty crouching bare;
     He loves that girl, the girl who isn’t there.
